Homeopathy is a therapeutic method which clinically applies the ‘Law of Similars’ and which uses medicinal substances in weak or infinitesimal doses.
Law of Similars
The Law of Similars was observed by Hippocrates 25 centuries ago and simply means ‘The Same things which Cause the Disease Cure it’. This phenomenon was further studied by a German physician, Christian Samuel Hahnemann, around the 18th century. He observed that this hypothesis was correct, but only when very weak or even infinitesimal doses were used.
How Homeopathy Works
Homeopathic therapeutics act together with the body’s reactions. It stimulates the defense mechanisms so as to make them work more effectively. They work together with them, and it is for this very reason that very small or infinitesimal doses are all that is needed, as an overly-strong dose could cause unpleasant aggravation of symptoms.
Choosing a remedy can be a complicated process. Unlike conventional medicine where you may use steroid creams with all forms of eczema, homeopathy works completely differently. You may have three people with eczema who present differently with their rashes. One may have a scabby rash that weeps yellow liquid, the other a dry flaky eczema, another with very red itchy eczema. A homeopath will treat them all with different remedies based on their unique presentations.
A homeopath will look at the following modalities to decide which remedy to give:
- What triggered the symptom
- What makes it better or worse
- Where is it located
- Any other changes that happened at the same time, both physical and emotional
- Physical characteristics of the person
Homeopathic treatment may include:
- Constitutional remedies
- Miasmatic remedies
